Roam Series..Lauren Auerbach

To roam is to live...

So, in the spirit of leading a more vivid life BOTEH asks long-time muse and model, Lauren Auerbach, about her recent travels to Isla Holbox in Mexico and how she makes the most of her time abroad.

WHAT DID YOU LOVE ABOUT ISLA HOLBOX?

Holbox is a two-hour drive from Cancún followed by a 30-minute ferry, and the moment I arrived, I knew I was in the right place. The water is the most unreal shade of turquoise, and paired with the endless blue skies, it’s completely mesmerising. The island is made up of sandy streets, with golf carts, buggies, and bikes instead of cars, which instantly slows everything down. I was really craving something easy and low-key, far from the party energy of Tulum, and Holbox definitely delivered

WHERE TO STAY?

Casa Cat Ba is a small beachfront boutique hotel with just six rooms and hands down the best bedroom view I’ve ever had. Quiet, intimate, and perfect if you want to wake up to the ocean.

Casa Las Tortugas is a larger hotel with more amenities, including great beach front loungers, a restaurant, pool and on-site yoga. Great if you want comfort and options without losing the relaxed island feel.

WHERE TO EAT?

Maiztro serves excellent tacos in a casual garden setting, with great cocktails and micheladas.
Big Fish is the go-to for fresh ceviche and lobster.
Taquería Mateo is perfect for a no-frills street taco moment.
Piedrasanta is more upscale, set in a stunning outdoor space, with amazing cocktails and a beautifully executed menu.

FAVOURITE THINGS TO DO?

Walk north along the beach to the sandbars, where the water is incredibly clear and shallow. On the south side of the island, you can see bioluminescence in the water after watching the sunset with a cocktail in hand. Boat tours or kayaking trips to nearby islands are a great way to spot flamingos and explore more of the area.

WHERE TO SHOP?

Le Bazaar is a well-curated shop with great beach dresses and accessories.
Barro Azul carries beautiful artisan ceramics and art prints from all over Mexico.

Tip: Book a beachfront hotel with loungers. Not having to chase beach clubs or minimum spends makes the whole experience way more relaxed.
